The myth of world peace

As we all know, every beauty pageant contestant wants world peace.  Hell, we would all like world peace, even the soldiers, because war is messy.  The only problem is that world peace is not possible, on any level.

Let’s define world peace as no war between two or more sovereign states.  This would, by definition, exclude civil wars and governmental attacks against it’s own people.  And keep in mind, this definition is only for the sake of this argument.

There have been many tries at world peace in the last 200 years, but they have all failed.  The first was after Napoleon was defeated.  Prince Metternich, a German, thought that peace could be lasting if there was a balance of power among the European powers.  Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, another German, took up this mantra, and set up alliances that would keep everyone one from going to war.  This of course failed, and actually lead to World War One.

After World War One, President Woodrow Wilson thought that the League of Nations would be able to stop war from occurring.  But, the League of Nations proved to be useless, because Hitler ignored them, which did not stop World War II.  The idea of a “league of nations” did not die with World War II though, which is where we got the idea for the United Nations (UN) from.

The UN has also failed to bring peace.  Some may say that it still has the capability to bring about world peace, but this is a wish and can not be backed up with any hard facts.  The opposite can be proven though.  Let’s just show some wars/conflicts that the United States (US) has been involved with, since the creation of the UN:  Korean War, Bay of Pigs, Vietnam War, Grenada, Gulf War I, War in Afghanistan , and Gulf War II amongst others.  Other states as well, like France, USSR/Russia, Britain, Ethiopia, Egypt, India and China , have all been involved in wars.  So when you add up all the wars between states since the UN was formed it can be seen that it has failed in its mission.

Given these examples of failure, it shows that world peace can not be had under the conditions that humanity has lived in since humanity came into existence.  The only peace that can ever be found is inside of a state.  There is peace in the US, there is peace within Russia, there is peace in Germany, and so on and so forth.  What this means, is that the only way to have world peace would be to have only one sovereign government that controls all of the world (given the definition in this case).

I know some of you are thinking that an alien invasion might also bring humanity together, but I like to think in the given reality.  Plus, if we are fighting against an alien species that really isn’t peace, now is it?

Now, if we add civil wars and governmental attacks against their own people into the mix, there is just no way that world peace is attainable.  Sorry hippies, it’s just the truth.

Peace out.
