Syria: the Next Somalia

When asked the UN special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, said “[Syria] will be become another Somalia. It will not be divided, as many have predicted. It’s going to be a failed state, with warlords all over the place.”

Isn’t this a great show of what the UN and working together can do?  This is the most ridiculous thing ever, and all it will do is make the world see that the UN is pointless. The whole point of the UN in Syria was to end the fighting, and actually help the Syrian people. If you look at the West as well, that was their aim too.  As we know, we have all failed.

While this all started with the Arab Spring, it actually can be blamed on the West. If the West hadn’t helped the Libyan rebels, which toppled Qaddafi, the people of Syria wouldn’t have protested so heavily.  And if the rebels in Syria hadn’t been promised helped it would be over by now. (Of course Assad is to blame as well, not trying to say he’s innocent in this.)

Our policies along with Russia’s, Saudi Arabia’s, and Iran’s have caused this human tragedy.  And if Brahimi is right, we must do everything to stop another failed state from emerging, even if that is by helping Assad.  The people of Syria deserve better than our failed state, because if it fails, it is our fault.
