Similarities

We are all, by now, used to scientific news articles on the cooling climate to always have a mention at the bottom of the article, that states something like:  “These cooling patterns should not be confused to global cooling, for there is a consensus that man is causing global warming/global climate change.”

A new development is starting to show the same type of insanity.  If you haven’t noticed, it’s all about the economy stupid, specifically the rate of unemployment.

For the last couple of months, when the reports were made of having over 500,000 people being laid off it would always say that: “At least it isn’t as high as expected/It’s not as many as last month, so that is a good sign.”  I’m sorry, it isn’t a good sign when for months on end over 500,000 people are losing their jobs.

Trying to spin this into a positive is retarded, and here is why.  Let’s say that we have a total of 100,000,000 (one hundred million, if you don’t want to count the commas) people in the civilian work force.  Now if we keep losing 500,000 jobs a month, which is 6 million people a year, it will at some point get to an equilibrium where there are no more jobs that can be lost.  This doesn’t mean that the economy is getting better, it just means that it is still bad.

The only sign, that is good in the case of unemployment is when the claims overall start decreasing.  This means that the number of people receiving unemployment drops, instead of gains, like it has for a long time, for we are somewhere around 9.5% unemployment at this time.  It is that number that needs to drop, not the amount of those newly laid-off.

The basic thought here, is that the media should let the news be the news.  Don’t analyze it, don’t try to make it seem worse or better, just do your job of reporting.  Especially, in cases where you are trying to say that everything you just said doesn’t really matter, for it means nothing.  If that were the case, why the hell did you report it.
