It was just reported that Michael Sam was only drafter because the NFL blackmailed the St. Louis Rams. If the Rams hadn’t drafted him the Rams were going to be featured on a HBO show called “Hard Knocks,” so he was drafted.
If you don’t remember, Michael Sam was the first openly gay football player to be drafted by a NFL team. After the draft his football career took a nose dive into a shallow pool.
In response to this news, Sam said that he was not surprised. He went on to say that he wished that the Rams had never drafted him, and that his football career would have been better if they hadn’t done him the kindness of drafting him. (I think its impossible to say if his career would have been better.)
Throughout the whole PR debacle that started with pushing to draft an openly gay man, I thought that it was too forced. He was only drafted because he was gay, and he even admits that it did not help him out. People should be chosen for their talents, not for who they are, unless that is their job of course.
Just because he was great in college doesn’t mean he can jump into the pros. Many college stars never have a NFL career, and it appears that every NFL team knew that he wasn’t ready, at least on a level to be drafted.
The NFL pushed Sam too hard, and they just wanted him as a poster boy to show that they are up with the times, and that they love gay people. You know, the whole fake PR BS.
