The question that came to my mind was why were people so upset? (They actually wanted Hale to die for his joke.) Given that, it seems that this scientist celebrity, Tyson, has become something much bigger than just a man. Is he science’s answer to Mohammad? Is he now above being made fun of? (I’m sure he doesn’t think so.) When someone uses his image, must a fatwa be place on the guilty? I’m sure all scientists would love a good stoning, just to make sure everyone was scared into believing as they do. Galileo would love it, don’t you think?
Science is supposedly the realm of logic and questioning. How is this hate any part of it? This type of blind devotion to Science has been forming in the last few decades. If Science is questioned, even by a scientist doing his job, they are labeled a heretic. Those that hate it when Science is questioned actually know nothing of science. Just because you believe in a specific scientific theory doesn’t make it the one and only answer. Hell, I still believe that Pluto is a planet, sorry Tyson. What makes one theory more valid than another? It is a better understanding, and to get to that better understanding, all things must be questioned. So with that, I know that Pluto isn’t a planet, and never was technically, but my schooling has taught me to believe that Pluto is.
Science is the realm of logic and questioning, not blind devotion. That belongs to religion. Due to that, Mohammad, Jesus, and Ganesh welcome Neil deGrasse Tyson to the pantheon of human religion.
