My wife and I love to sit outside and enjoy warm weather. When that’s not possible in Michigan, we love to watch tv. While we watch many types of shows, there are some that just don’t add up. The most cringe worthy is Scorpion, it has truly gotten stupid, but we keep watching in order to make fun of it. The other one that never added up was Love It or List It on HGTV.
If you don’t know the show the premise is that it’s a competition between one person who remodels a family’s current home in order for the family to stay, while another person shows the family new homes to move into. Will the remodel or the new house win the couple over?
Well, it seems that the remodel aspect of the show is a scam, at least that’s what one couple in North Carolina say in their lawsuit. The couple said that they gave $140,000 to remodel the home, but only $55,000 was spent on the home, with the production company taking the other $85,000 for themselves.
There’s more to the lawsuit, but it doesn’t surprise me, because as my wife and I sat around watching the show, we compared it to other shows. Take Fixer Upper as an example. They go around with a client and buy a house that needs a remodel, and then they fix it up in a very nice way. The difference is that Fixer Upper rarely runs into unforeseen problems, and can get a lot of work done for the money. Love It or List It always, and I mean ALWAYS, runs into unforeseen problems, which means that the money has to be spent on the “problem” and not what was needed in the remodel. Also when there is a problem Fixer Upper usually fixes it for a few grand, while Love It or List It take tens of thousands of dollars to fix.
While I do not know the merits of the lawsuit, I do know that things always seemed weird with Love It or List It. Yes, I do know that repairs cost different amounts in different areas, because of labor and other costs. However, these things still seemed to cost a little too much.
Let us hope that the lawsuit brings clarity to the issue.
