Limiting Deportation of Illegal Immigration

Homeland Security is now looking into limiting the number of deportations of illegal immigrants, as DHS thinks this will make life easier for that class of immigrants.  Apparently, the threat of deportation is complicating life for those that illegally came into this country, how sad.  How about the fact that they can’t get legal jobs?  How is it better to allow them to stay, while denying them a way to make a living?

Of course the overall plan is to pass legislation that will allow those immigrants to stay and work in the country legally.  What if that plan fails though, the conservative Republicans still have a strangle hold on the House, and things seem to be getting worse for the Democrats prospects in the upcoming mid-term elections, which doesn’t bode well for immigration reform.  And if the plan does fail, what sort of livelihood does that leave those that won’t be deported, but also can’t even get a minimum wage job?  A pretty crappy one, I would say, at least by American standards.

Given today’s prospects, there is little chance that immigration reform will happen correctly.  If it happens, it will be a bunch of half measures, which will get us to this same point in the next 30 years, because for the foreseeable future there will be more people who want to come to the US than there are visas.

Is there a perfect immigration policy to be had?  No, there is not, but it does not help to keep these people in limbo.  And it is a limbo that has been created by the Obama administration.  The immigrants that can take advantage of the Dream act policy are in limbo, even if they can work legally, because the next administration may take that away.  The same would happen if deportations are limited.  These stop gap measures only cause more uncertainty; they do not solve anything.  The only certainty these policies give is of fear every time there is a presidential election.

Ruling by administrative fiat is failed policy.
