Computer or Human Drivers, or both?: A Case for Fully Automated Cars

Driverless cars are about to be a reality. The question of whether or not to demand the capability of driver input is currently under discussion by both US and EU governments.  Most say that a human has to be able to take over, when needed.  On the other side Google has developed a car with no possible human input. Beyond any feelings of human verses computer and the singularity, Google has it right.

Most say that humans are better able to navigate bad conditions, like snow covered roads. This argument is that human would be better at keeping the car on the road.  My personal worry is that somebody could hack your car, and kidnap you while being 1000 miles away, but I digress.

While all that is well and good, think about how you learned how to drive. This was not a natural thing to do. It took many years to truly master.

Ok, now that you have that in mind. What will happen if the next generation never had to drive, at least for the most part. They wouldn’t have the experience to be better than the computer, the only ones that might have a chance are those that play racing games, and even those people would have issues with a real car.  Overall, people will get to a point that they are no better than a hamster behind the wheel.

Given this, society would not want any of those people to drive. And because of that, all cars must be fully automated, with the capability to drive in all conditions with no human input, it is a must. It won’t take long, a year or two after fully automated cars are introduce that the problem will arise.

Cars should be fully automated, or have full human input with computer backup.  It gets dangerous otherwise.
