Recently the US sent some special forces to “train” the Iraqi troops that are trying fight ISIS (ISIL if you prefer). Meanwhile, Syria has conducted airstrikes within Iraq, on ISIS, Russia has set fighter jets, and troops to train, to Iraq, and Iran has given military support as well. All of these, except for the US, have been without conditions. The US, however, has demanded that Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki develop a more inclusive government, and allow the Sunnis and Kurds to have more say in the government. While the condition is well and good, it will probably lead to Iraq pulling away from the US, and towards Iran, Russia, and Syria. That’s if the government doesn’t fall.
In general, the newly announced caliphate that ISIL setup could be the lead up to a redrawing of borders in the Middle East. There will probably be a back and forth, but the Islamic extremists have been calling for this, and I believe there is a good chance of it happening. Even before ISIS was in the news I thought there was a good chance of extremists taking over all of the Middle East. Of course there will be some countries that holdout, but a large swath is in danger of having their states being over ridden.
