From that brief run down it would be easy to give up, but that wouldn’t solve much.
On a new front though, it looks like reason is starting to overcome policies endorsed by the First Lady, when it comes to school lunches. Overall, Mrs. Obama’s goal was a good one, to make lunches healthy. The only problem is that kids, no matter the age, will generally choose to skip the fruits and veggies, especially the veggies. This means that if you force veggies onto the plate they will end up in the trash, because mom isn’t their to force them down the kids throat.
Let’s take myself for example. Back in the last two decades of the last millennium, I was in school, and I had to eat the gross public school lunches. Elementary school was the worst, because there were no options. You had to have whatever they served, much like the Model T when it came out. Once I got to middle school/junior high, the options got better, as in you had two options for lunch, or you could just buy cookies, instead of having to eat the school lunch. Oh, and yes, I survived on cookies, unless it was pizza or hamburger day. The first high school that I attended was even better, because they had a deal with Pizza Hut, and I would eat a personal pepperoni pizza practically every day (try saying that five times fast), unless I forgot to get money from my parents, at which point I would just not eat, because I would rather not eat than eat the regular school lunch. After my freshman year we moved from Minnesota to Kansas, where I went from a school of 3-5K to a school of 3-500 (my class dropped from 1200 to 80). Unfortunately, this meant loosing Pizza Hut, and having to choose from eating a hot dog that had shades of blue and green in it, eating a chocolate cookie with chocolate milk (let’s face it, only the weird kids drank the regular milk that smelled and tasted funny), or not eating. Generally, I went with the cookie option, unless it was hamburger day (their pizza sucked, it was a crappy version made in house).
With all those “healthy” meals I was eating, I graduated high school at 5’11” and 140 lbs, per the First Lady, I should have been 300 lbs, at least. Given all this, the main thing is to get food into the kids, calories matter, while veggies and fruit are good options, they are not what children, or even many adults choose to eat (you should see what I eat when the wife is away).
